The way we live insulates us from the rhythms of our planet, the cycles
of nature and our subsequent relationship to the vitality around us that
is necessary for balance in our lives. Let me be specific. The electromagnetic
radiation that we encounter from cell phones, TV's, microwave stations,
electric shavers, hair dryers, and so forth, put the body in a position
where it has to fight to protect itself from the hostile bombardment of
these energies that it is unable to process.
There
are natural polarities in life; light and dark, good and bad, exercise
and rest. It is natural to function in alternating phases or rhythms.
Inhalation and exhalation; some are rapid like the pulse of the heart.
These cycles occur throughout nature and if you are observant you will
notice them everywhere. There is even a shift between right and left hemisphere
dominance in the brain that takes place about every two hours. This means
that your mindset rhythmically shifts from linear to intuitive in regular
two-hour cycles, as breathing focus alternates between left and right
nostril. What scientists are now recognizing is that the rhythm of the
breath (the relationship of the inhale to the exhale) is what takes the
lead and is the catalyst for the response of all body rhythms and their
relationship in our environment. Our dominant nostril determines which
aspect of our being is presently engaged. When we honor this harmonious
flow within ourselves we can move gracefully through our days, recognizing
that we are part of a much larger energy configuration that coordinates
with lunar, solar, and universal cycles.
When
our right nostril is activated the left hemisphere or logical portion
of our brain is engaged. This is the sun or active breath. When this side
is open we are geared to act assertively in the world. This is a good
time to be busy in sports, athletics or business competition. During this
time the body is also ready for its more operative processes like eating,
digesting or defecating. During this phase one is likely to be warm, feel
dry and be ready for action.
When our left nostril is activated the right hemisphere or intuitive
portion of our brain is engaged. This is the cooling, moistening, relaxing
breath that creates an open intuitive state. With the right hemisphere
open it is easy to listen and be receptive. Relationships will prosper.
Whenever there are hard lessons in life, with this side active you have
a good chance to have a creative solution. It is great for meditating,
aggregating wealth, and for artistry, singing and music. If the right
side of the brain is active it is easy for the body to process fluids.
You may notice the left nostril to be open when rain is coming. Maybe
you will find your left nostril open when you are thirsty, or when drinking
water or urinating. This rhythm is not something that you need to directly
control. I ask you to just notice your body rhythms and their relationship
with your breath. Retrain yourself to naturally have a strong inhale and
a surrendered exhale using the Breath WarmUp tape series so the main pulse
of your body will be honoring life within, through and around you. The
primary body rhythm is the relationship of the inhalation with the exhalation.
