Overcoming
Restlessness in Meditation through Breathing
QUESTION:
How do I keep my mind still so I can meditate?
ANSWER:
Being still and
listening to everything can be quite an introduction to what goes on in
our minds! Meditation is a listening - a listening in a way that is without
judgement, without structure, without direction. It is a way to be fully
conscious of everything that is happening around you simultaneously. It
can be our natural aware, curious state of being.
With the hectic pace of
planetary life, we are often so enamored of "getting-things-done"
that we find ourselves slowly dying from the accumulation of stress toxins.
We are barely aware of the build-up. Stop and think about it. How many
times do you find yourself holding your breath? Holding your breath is
stopping the flow of life-force energy in your body. Plainly and simply
you are choking your cells - killing them. So often we approach the meditation
process with the same fervor that we approach life. I'm sorry, but it
doesn't work. The most profound way to introduce relaxation and bring
this meditative awareness into your life is to start focusing on your
breathing. Place your attention upon your breath coming in through your
nose. Feel its temperature, speed and tone. Feel it entering your nose,
moving into the sinuses of your head, then falling out around you as you
exhale.
Placing your attention
on the in and out tides of your breath can't help but calm you. If you
allow your belly to move out during the inhalation process, you activate
your diaphragm. When the diaphragm is activated during the breathing process
you become calm and energized at the same time.
The breath brings with
it your life-force energy. It is the very stuff that makes you an aware,
energetic being. When you take the time to gently follow your breathing
you can strengthen your clear relationship to Soul and make the process
of meditation and your overall life easier and more fun for you. All it
takes is practice.
